Sense of Place

went to a wonderful solo
exhibition of new paintings by Rachael Mia Allen on Saturday at the Lighthouse Gallery, Penzance.

Entitled 'A Sense of Place'. Rachael chose the title as she feels her strong connection with her surroundings enables her to bring the canvas alive.

I am a long time fan of Rachel's work which has latterly moved from sweeping seascapes to the more intricate and intimate landscapes from around her new home.

Rachael's work is made from multi layers of printing inks in rich colours that evoke the natural light as it falls across the landscape. Her mark making is magical and the foreground textures that looks at first as abstract as a Jackson Pollock, when viewed from a distance cleverly snap into finer focus as the flora and fauna of West Cornwall.

These paining to me hold the essence of what the Cornish landscape truly is. Her exhibition is well worth a visit and is on until 22nd July.
