The Art of Travel

"We TRAVEL not to escape life, but FOR LIFE NOT TO ESCAPE US...."
Anonymous
There is a saying in Cornwall it goes something like this:
The Cornish went out to the four corners of the world and in the summer the world comes back to Cornwall.
It certainly felt like that today walking home from work passing groups of tourists all talking different languages. Truro is a wet weather destination and it is certainly not beach weather today for the average holiday maker. It seems like everybody I know is on holiday at the moment, which made my usual Monday mood even bluer this morning.
I'm counting down the days when I too can relax and enjoy time on my terms. I saw this quote yesterday and thought it an interesting way of looking at the art of travel. Most of us book holidays as a form of escape whether we consciously think it or not, to give us something to look forward to - a reward for working hard.
When the chips are down there is a flighty bird inside of me that whispers, 'fly away', but I often counter it by saying to myself that 'you take yourself with you'. A true escape is an inside job and not one that can be brought from the pages of a glossy brochure.
This then brings us to the idea that a good holiday is more than just escaping the routine, its about experience life and to savour the beauty in the unexpected pleasures. This is a picture I took from the roof of a camper van we hired in Devon a few years ago. This fiery Sunset just appeared the first night we arrived at our campsite - and was a glorious surprise! So don't let the summer pass you by or life for that matter, I leave you with another quote I found on Pinterest this week "life is like a road trip - enjoy each day and don't carry too much baggage". Back to work!!
